What is your learning style and why is it important?

One lesson I learned my first year was understanding my learning style and applying it to how I learned and studied for exams. As a visual learner, I find it most helpful to read through a PowerPoint while following along with the text and images the professor discusses.

Every student learns differently. The three predominant learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic/tactile learning. Visual learners absorb information best when they can “visualize relationships and ideas,” and learn from diagrams, charts, and images. Auditory learners learn best when listening to information presented to them, such as hearing a recorded lecture, reading out loud, or explaining concepts to a family member, roommate or friend. Kinesthetic or tactile learners learn by “doing” an activity to understand a concept or by being “physically engaged” while learning, for example prepping and restoring a tooth in sim clinic vs. just reading about how to complete the procedure. All of these learning styles are found among dental students. Try to pinpoint your learning style to optimize your studying habits.
